One of the things I have been doing with my first graders is to use some basic computer skills such as accessing the internet. After reading about screencasting, this is a great way to show my student how to to access a our homepage, http://sites.google.com/site/misfirstgrade/home . The second part of the screencast will be using Google to search for different kind of jobs.
Here is a step by step instruction with narrative of how the screencast consists of. Steps would include:
Opening Internet Explorer
Finding the address bar
Type in the website: http://sites.google.com/site/misfirstgrade/home
Demonstrate some links on the website (map, personal files).
Showing them how to save the website in bookmark or delicious.
Going back to the address bar again, type in http://www.google.com/
Type in a job in the search bar.
Demonstrate some links from the search results.
This will teach the kids some basic skills of using the internet. This would allow the kids to view it as a reference/library whenever they want to or when they have difficulties. You can create multiple screencast for each function so kids can view each one they want to. This will benefit kids that learn visually and for kids that don’t remember after the lesson. The screencast can be shown on any video equipment so large classes don't have to crowd around one computer watching the teacher demonstrate.

Yasue,
ReplyDeleteI think this is basic enough for your first graders and will start teaching them some skills on how to use the internet. I don't think screencasts should be too difficult anyway-if it is then the first graders would soon lose interest! :) KathyW
